Why this blog?

My name is Kristian de Groot. I’m a Dutch citizen and currently living in Rotterdam. Graphene has caught my attention since October 2010 when my family bought shares in Focus Metals, a company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange Venture Index. Since then I have become fascinated by this exciting material from an investment perspective.

As someone who has no background in chemistry or physics I couldn’t tell you much about it from a scientific perspective – I’ll leave that to the brilliant scientists all around the world working with graphene. But what I do know about this so-called wonder material is that it will change the world, as we know it. And as with any product that has the potential to disrupt existing structures, enormous investment opportunities arise. This blog is based on that particular premise.

“So what exactly is it about then?” I hear you ask…

Graphene Ventures is about exploring investment opportunities in small and medium enterprises (SME) focused on commercialising graphene-based products.

I’ve decided to focus my exploration on this blog into three areas:
1. In-depth analysis of Grafoid Inc.
2. In-depth analysis of Vorbeck Materials Corp.
3. General writings about the development of a graphene-hub in Manchester, UK

In the upcoming months and years I’ll exercise due diligence in my research into Grafoid and Vorbeck. In my opinion both companies are part of the early leaders in the SME sector that commercialise numerous graphene-based products. I’ll comment on the way both companies operate, their strategies and of course I’ll analyse their financial results. During this ‘due diligence’ journey I hope to learn lessons that others and I can use when investing in graphene-based start-ups in the upcoming graphene era.

Last but not least: this blog is all about learning by doing and rapid iteration. So please do let me know your opinion on anything I post.

I look forward to any feedback you can provide!

For the purpose of disclosure, I wish to make known that I have received no compensation of any kind for this blog or my opinions. All opinions stated herein are strictly my own. My family owns shares in Focus Metals, which has a 40% stake in Grafoid Inc.
